AirDrop

Introduction

Since the update to iOS 26.2 (as well as iPadOS 26.2 and macOS 26.2), Apple has tightened the security requirements for data exchange via AirDrop. Many users, especially in schools and businesses, have noticed that sending files suddenly requires entering a code—a behavior that did not exist under iOS 18.x.

If you attempt to send a file to a person who is not stored in your contacts, the transfer will be blocked until a numerical code is entered. This significantly complicates quick data exchange in classrooms or working groups.

Cause

According to official Apple documentation, this is a deliberate security feature designed to protect privacy:

  • Identity Verification: People who are not saved in your contacts must now use an AirDrop code to send you items.
  • Process: The recipient must select Continue, after which a code appears on their display. This code must be entered by the sender to authorize the transfer.
  • MDM Limitation: Administrators currently have no way to globally disable this prompt via Mobile Device Management (MDM). Apple does not offer MDM providers any more options in this regard than it does for end users.

Prerequisite: Apple Account and iCloud

Important: Using AirDrop in “Contacts Only” mode as well as maintaining a permanent code-free connection to known contacts requires a signed-in Apple Account (iCloud) on the device. More information can be found in the Apple documentation

On iPads without an Apple Account, a confirmation dialog appears when switching AirDrop to “Contacts Only,” indicating that iCloud is required. Without signing in, this setting cannot be used.

To ensure AirDrop works reliably in “Contacts Only” mode, the email address or phone number associated with the sender’s Apple Account must also be saved in the recipient’s contact card.

Workaround

The following approaches can be used to bypass the constant code entry:

Use the 30-Day Rule

Once a code has been successfully entered, the system remembers the connection. You can then continue to exchange items with this person via AirDrop for 30 days without needing to use an AirDrop code again.

Permanent Solution: Add to Contacts

The code prompt is permanently suppressed if the sender and recipient save each other in their Contacts.

  • After receiving an item, select the option Create New Contact or Add to Contact.
  • Once the person is saved as a known contact, the exchange will proceed as usual without additional verification.

Manage or Ignore Known Contacts

If you wish to terminate a connection before the 30-day period expires:

  • Open the Contacts app.
  • Look for the person in the Other Known Contacts list.
  • Select the Ignore This Person option to end the automated exchange.
