Creating folders in the Home Screen Layout

The Home Screen Layout configuration arranges apps on the home screen of iOS and iPadOS devices and groups them into folders. The configuration itself is described in the article Home Screen Layout →.

Problem #

When setting up the policy configuration Home Screen Layout, no folders are created in the simulator.

Solution #

Folders can only be created when the option Personalize home screen layout is selected under Layout type. With the layout type Group apps on home screen by category, folders are generated from the app categories and the editor is locked.

There is no button for creating a folder. A folder is created via drag & drop: an app or web clip is dragged onto another app or web clip in the layout or in the dock and held absolutely still there for about 0.7 seconds. If the mouse pointer moves during this time, no folder is created. A folder cannot be dragged into another folder.

The editor has separate tabs for iPhone and iPad; the two layouts are maintained independently of each other.
