Managed Domains

The configuration Managed Domains defines which email and web domains iOS treats as company domains. The configuration is available for devices with Device Enrollment, but not for devices with User Enrollment (BYOD).

Email domains

The company domains are entered in the list Email Domains, e.g. relution.io. When composing a message, the Mail app marks all recipient addresses in red whose domain is not on the list. This makes it immediately visible when a message leaves the company.

Sending to these addresses is not blocked. The marking is purely informational.

Web domains

iOS treats URLs from the domains in the list Web Domains as managed. Content downloaded from these pages in Safari is therefore considered company data, e.g. a PDF from the intranet.

This list only has a visible effect in combination with the restrictions on opening documents in the configuration Restrictions →:

  • Allow opening managed documents in unmanaged apps
  • Allow opening unmanaged documents in managed apps

If opening managed documents in unmanaged apps is prohibited, a PDF from the intranet can then only be opened in managed apps. More background on separating managed and unmanaged data is available in the article Data separation →.
