Relution Decon

As of version 5.27, it is possible to set up a DNS-based content filter in Relution for iOS. This feature enables a secure and focused internet access by restricting access to certain websites and apps on the devices. With AI-driven content categorization, Relution Decon provides a comprehensive child protection filter with advanced configuration options.

What is Relution Decon?

Relution Decon is an AI-powered add-on for iOS and iPadOS that filters content in real-time to create a secure digital environment. Using DNS-based content control, Decon blocks unwanted websites and apps, ensuring that users can work and learn in a protected, distraction-free digital space. Decon offers flexible and granular control, making it suitable for both educational and corporate environments.

By using a DNS proxy, Relution Decon directs all requests to the Decon server, where websites are classified and either allowed or blocked according to policy settings. All data transmissions are secured through SSL encryption to protect user activity from unauthorized access.

Decon App

The Decon app is automatically installed on iOS devices when the policy is applied. It monitors the device’s DNS requests, ensuring that only permitted content is accessed. The app activates a system-wide DNS proxy that runs in the background and cannot be disabled by the user, providing continuous and reliable content control.

Decon App

In the app, users can view the current status of Relution Decon. When the content filter is active, the app indicates that Decon is operational. The app also allows users to view the reasons for blocked websites and provides an overview of the filter categories applied. This gives administrators a powerful tool to manage internet usage efficiently and purposefully.

In the device policy, click on Add and select Relution Decon. This policy will automatically install the Decon app on the respective iOS devices, which acts as a proxy and sends all DNS requests from the device to the Decon server. Setup is complete once the policy is published. In the app, Decon is displayed as active after successful setup..

The configuration options of the policy follow the following hierarchy (from highest to lowest priority):

Allow- and Block-Websites

Specific websites can be explicitly allowed or blocked in the Allow and Block lists, independent of the categories. Note that only the domain of a website can be specified in these lists, without distinguishing between different paths.

Allow- and Block-Apps

Similar to website control, individual apps can be allowed or blocked. The focus here is on the internet access of the apps; the basic functionality remains available as long as no internet connection is required.

Limitations

Certain limitations should be considered when using Relution Decon:

  • Caching: Blocked sites and configurations are cached for up to one minute, so changes in the policy may not be applied immediately.
  • Path Independence: DNS operates on a domain level. It is not possible to set different rules for different paths on the same domain. For example, https://relution.io/contact and https://relution.io/ are treated the same way.
  • App Blocking: When blocking apps, only the internet access of the app is blocked, not the core functionality itself. Apps may also have cached content that remains visible even without internet access.
