Setup Assistant

The configuration Setup Assistant hides setup steps that iOS shows on a device that has already been set up, e.g. after a software update. The configuration is available from iOS 14 and only takes effect on supervised devices. It is not available for devices with User Enrollment (BYOD).

Difference from the DEP profile

The steps of the Setup Assistant can be skipped in two places that take effect at different times:

DEP profileSetup Assistant configuration
TimeInitial setup of the deviceAfter enrollment, e.g. after a software update
Configured inDEP profile → of Automated Device Enrollment (ADE, DEP in the portal)Policy with the configuration Setup Assistant

The steps selected in the DEP profile only apply to the initial setup. If iOS later shows setup steps again, e.g. for appearance, Siri or Screen Time after an update, these can only be hidden via the configuration Setup Assistant. Without this configuration, such steps appear as intended by Apple.

The configuration is therefore not a prerequisite for enrollment. It is only needed if no additional setup steps should be shown after the initial setup either.

Settings

In the section Skip the following steps, the steps to be hidden are enabled. The selection corresponds to the setup steps in the DEP profile.

The switches in the section General, e.g. Skip accessibility or Skip Siri setup, only apply to macOS and have no effect on iOS devices. See Setup Assistant (macOS) →.
