Apple Classroom

Apple Classroom with Relution

Relution allows you to distribute the configuration for using the Classroom app on Apple devices managed by Relution (iPadOS / macOS). Apple Classroom is an app used in the education sector to enable teachers to control and monitor student devices during lessons.

Requirements

  1. Two devices registered in Relution (Supervised).
  2. At least two users.
  3. The Apple Classroom app must be installed on one device (teacher).
  4. A valid education license for Relution.

Network preparation

  1. The devices must be on the same network if Classroom is to be used.
  2. Client-to-client communication must be possible in the Wi-Fi network.
  3. Port 3284: For sharing documents via Classroom.
  4. Port 3285: For communication with the Classroom app.

User preparation

  1. At least two users are required (one teacher and one student).
  2. The users must be added to the appropriate system user groups, e.g., in our example, UIT - Teacher / UIT - Student
  3. Classes must be created under EducationClasses. This step can either be automated by importing via the interface (LDAP) or users can be imported via a CSV file.

Configuration

Relution distributes so-called education configurations to the devices. These configurations contain information about which classes and students can be controlled by which teachers. In order for the distribution of the education configuration to be successful, users must be assigned to the devices. The assignment can be done either manually or via CSV file.

Alternatively, this can be done by activating the Enforce user authentication option in the Configuration profile section. Please note that the devices must be reset (‘deleted’) and then re-registered if the users are assigned via the Configuration profile option.

Troubleshooting

Occasionally, individual or multiple users may be displayed as offline for the teacher. Possible causes and solutions:

  1. Invalid or expired education configuration:
  • If the configuration is invalid, it must be reinstalled. To do this, the user must be removed from the class and reassigned.

  • If classes were created automatically via LDAP, the user must be removed from the device and reassigned. Note: Problems may occur when using dynamic device groups on a user basis.

  1. Incorrect network configuration (ports or Wi-Fi networks):
  • If the required ports are closed or the devices are in different WLAN networks, connection problems may occur.
  • To check this, a mobile hotspot can be used to connect the devices to each other. If the devices are displayed as online in this environment, the network configuration must be adjusted accordingly.
