Windows kiosk mode

The Windows Kiosk Mode policy configuration restricts a device to a single application. The policy is available starting with Windows 10 version 1803 for the Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions. Typical use cases are information terminals, self-service stations and examination devices.

User sign-in

User login type determines which account runs in kiosk mode:

  • Auto login (default): the device signs in automatically with a kiosk account that Windows provides for this purpose.
  • Local user: kiosk mode applies to the account entered in the User login name field. The field only appears with this option and is then required. No automatic sign-in takes place; kiosk mode takes effect as soon as the account signs in.

Application type

Application type determines what is shown in kiosk mode: Microsoft Edge browser (default), Kiosk browser or Store App. The further fields depend on this selection and are described in the following sections. When the type is changed, Relution removes the browser settings of the previously selected type from the device.

Microsoft Edge

These fields appear with Microsoft Edge browser:

  • Edge Kiosk URL – address of the start page, required field. A valid URL must be entered.
  • Microsoft Edge Kiosk mode type – Multi-Tab (default) or Tabless.
  • Refresh browser after idle time – time in minutes (0–1440). If the field is empty, Relution uses 5 minutes for Multi-Tab and 0 for Tabless.

Kiosk browser

These fields appear with Kiosk browser:

  • Default homepage URL – start page of the kiosk browser.
  • Show home buttons, Show navigation buttons and End session button – show the respective buttons in the kiosk browser.
  • Refresh browser after idle time – time in minutes (1–1440). If the field is empty, Relution does not set a value.
  • Allow URLs (max 500) – without an entry, all websites can be reached in the kiosk browser. As soon as at least one URL is entered, only the entered URLs can be reached and all other websites are blocked. Wildcards (*) are not allowed, each entry must be a valid URL.

Store App

With Store App, the Select app button is used to choose the Windows app from the Relution App Store that is shown in kiosk mode (required field).

The app must already be installed on the device (see the note above). If it is not installed, the configuration is not applied on the device.
